He attended L.A. City College, UCLA and Scripps Institute of Oceanography 
(beginning Sept 1941) to work toward Ph.D. in microbiology. Served 4 years in the 
Navy, most overseas, with 20 months in New Zealand, where he met and married 
Bettie. Then two more years at sea.

Dec. 19, 1917 — May 14, 2004 

David M. Updegraff of Louisville died of natural causes Friday, May 14, 2004, at the 
HospiceCare Center in Louisville. He was 86. 

The son of Allan Updegraff and Florence Maule Updegraff, he was born Dec. 19, 
1917, in Woodstock, N.Y. He married Betti L. Mitchell on July 26, 1943, in New 
Zealand. She died Feb. 14, 2003. 

Mr. Updegraff moved to Louisville in 1990. 

He graduated from Hollywood High School in Hollywood, Calif. He earned a bachelor's 
degree from the University of California and a doctorate from the Scripps Institute in 
San Diego. 

Mr. Updegraff worked as a research scientist at the Denver Research Institute from 
1955 to 1968 and at 3M in St. Paul, Minn. He also worked for the Mobil Oil Co. in 
Dallas. He was a professor of microbiology in the Department of Chemistry and 
Geochemistry at the Colorado School of Mines from 1977 until 1993, when he retired. 
He then consulted until 1998. He served in the Navy from 1942 until 1946 and was a 
commissioned officer on the battleship USS Ponderosa in the South Pacific. 

Mr. Updegraff was a fellow at the Cawthorn Institute in Nelson, New Zealand, and at 
the American Society for Microbiology. 

He enjoyed nature, spending time at his cabin in Pinecliffe, bird-watching, reading, 
learning, attending lectures at the Conference on World Affairs and his weekly 
discussion group. 

"In his life, as in his death, our beloved father was an inspiration and is greatly 
missed," his family said. 

Survivors include a son, Dr. Jeffery Updegraff of Fort Collins; two daughters, Janice 
Baulsir of Lafayette and Wendy Upde of Louisville; seven grandchildren; and five 
great-grandchildren. 

A memorial servicewill be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 
1241 Ceres Drive, Lafayette. The Rev. Michael P. Corrigan will officiate. A reception 
will follow at the church.
